Checking into a hotel room.?

My friends and I were going out for my birthday (relatively far from home) and we were figuring that it would be easier to rent a hotel room rather then drive home late at night. I have a lot of questions. First off can you rent a room if you're under 21. We live in connecticut and if we don't rent there it would be in Mass. We're not really looking for anything fancy just something in case we don't want to drive. Also we want to know if we could pay in cash or if it has to be a card and if so would one of those american express giftcards work since none of us have a card yet. You will need to put up a credit card that WILL be swiped to hold the cost of the rental, you can pay cash when you check out. but a credit card willbe required. NEVER use a debit card, since they do swipe the card to verify if its a vaild card or not, it WILL hold the funds in your acct until you check out. This is a HUGE misunderstnading and it can cause you lots of fees with your bank. (trust me I am a banker).
