According to Gary McCartney of Brands in Space, trends in retail performance gathered from a recent world tour revealed surprising lessons for entrepreneurs and business owners. Nowadays low prices and hefty discounts do not amount so much to keep attracting customers. McCartney said that “added value to the shopping experience would be the ones (businesses) continuing to attract customers.” He even cited the US-based store, Bergdorf Goodman that encouraged its staff to connect with the customers and take note of their habits, likes, and dislikes. McCartney even remarked, “It’s hard to quantify and put a price on service and it’s hard for competitors to knock it off.”
Another lesson that can be learned from focusing on customer service is putting service before profit. This works both ways—for the customer and for the retailer. Satisfied customers often return, bringing additional sales that turn to profits for the retailer. Another form of extended customer service would be customizing a product according to the customer’s specifications. This added service would definitely set the enterprising and creative retailer or small business owner apart from the competition. McCartney told of a Nike store on Oxford Circus that gives the extra service of making the customers’ football boots to their preference, like favorite colors and such.
